In a world where hydration drinks are the rage, a new one has taken grocery stores and the internet by storm. This one is called Prime Drink, or Prime Hydration Drink, and has become so popular so fast that it sold out within hours of its launch in the United States. When the drink finally got its initial release across the pond, it also sold out in hours in the UK as well. What makes this Prime drink so popular and as far as hydration drinks go, just how healthy is it? Let’s take a look.
WHAT ARE PRIME DRINKS?
Prime Hydration Drink is being billed as a sports energy drink, which means it counts Gatorade and Powerade as two of their biggest rivals. But as the owners of the Prime Drink brand mentioned upon its release (and yes, we will be talking about the surprising owners in a bit), their goal from the get-go was to “rival some of the biggest companies on Earth” which do include Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Gatorade, and Powerade.
WHO IS THE OWNER?
This is where things get really interesting. When this pairing announced that they were going to put their bitter beef aside, it came as a shock but also with some excitement, as it was a partnership no one ever saw coming. We are talking, of course, about YouTube sensations, immediate enemies, boxing rivals, and now business partners, Logan Paul and KSI (whose real name is Olajide Olayinka Williams “JJ” Olatunji Jr.).
Shocking, most definitely. But in this day and age, it all comes down to marketing, and when two of the biggest names on YouTube, who took their bitter rivalry into the boxing ring not once, but twice, decide to put their differences aside and combine their talents, it is sure to get some publicity. Did it ever.
It all started back in 2018 when Paul and KSI began their run-up to their first boxing match. Prime Drink wasn’t even in its conception stage as the two began hurling personal bombs at each other. KSI actually started it all as he began his boxing career before Paul when he fought another YouTuber, Joe Weller, and knocked him out in the third round. After the fight, KSI decided to call out both the Paul brothers, Logan and Jake. “If any YouTuber wants it, you can come get it,” KSI said via the Sporting News after knocking out Weller. “Jake Paul, Logan Paul, any of the Pauls, I don’t care.” KSI was initially set to fight Jake Paul, but after further fight discussions, his opponent was changed to Logan.
The YouTubers agreed to a two-fight contract with KSI’s team handling the first bout and Paul’s team handling the second. The press conferences leading up to the fight were brutal and filled with controversy over the insults both YouTubers were throwing around. It was a nasty back and forth that had KSI making insults toward Jake Paul’s girlfriend, with him making fun of Paul for losing 15% of his testicle during a YouTube stunt gone wrong. “Apparently you only have 85% of your testicle,” KSI said at the time. “Let me give [your girlfriend] the extra 15. Let me show her a real man.”
KSI also took shots at Paul’s mom and dad, which finally became too much for Paul. He left the press conference early. Then on his Twitter account, Paul posted, “i would rather be vocal with silence than vocal with ignorance.”
The first fight ended with a majority draw as, by the end of the fight, they were both so winded that they could barely throw punches. This set up the second fight and this time, Paul was better prepared for the press conferences. Again, Prime Hydration Drink was something no one could foresee coming from this bitter relationship.
The second fight was just as bitter and saw Paul drop KSI to the mat but also had two points deducted during the fight. Those two points were enough to give KSI a split decision victory over Paul. Through it all though, Logan Paul saw something in KSI that was relatable – he saw himself.
“The beef was real, we hated each other, that’s why Prime has an innate sense of relatability and hope that you can make friends and connect,” Paul said on comedian Andrew Schultz’s Flagrant podcast. Paul then explained how he lost the second fight on “a weird two-point deduction” but he doesn’t consider it a loss, although he accepts it. “I can take an L but there’s learning in that and I learned that KSI and I were like, f*ck the beef, we’re the same person just across the pond. In a weird way, we’re really alike.”
Call it respect. Call it humility. Call it growing up. Call it a great business decision. Paul took to his Instagram page to announce their Prime Hydration Drink partnership in January and it has well over 1 million likes.
IS THE PRIME DRINK HEALTHY?
According to both Paul and KSI, their Prime Drink is healthier than Gatorade because it has less added sugar. They also claim that the Prime Drink is a better-formulated drink as well. So, let’s take a glance at what this Prime Hydration Drink is made of and see if we can conclude the healthiness that Paul and KSI claim.
WHAT IS PRIME DRINK MADE OF?
The very first thing that the Prime drink lists as an ingredient is filtered water. As far as sports nutrition and hydrating drinks go, filtered water is an ingredient that is the most hydrating. The Prime Drink also boasts coconut water as an ingredient. On their website, they claim Prime Drinks have 10% coconut water, which is another great ingredient as it is nutritious and filled with electrolytes.
On the negative side, Prime Drinks contain two artificial sweeteners, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium. Sucralose has been shown to negatively affect insulin function in healthy adults while the acesulfame potassium has been shown, in animal studies, to have a negative impact on gut function and brain function.
Prime Hydration Drink also contains citric acid, branched-chain amino acids such as l-isoleucine, l-valine, and l-leucine, natural flavors, and vitamin and mineral blends. When you stack Prime drink up against Gatorade, the big difference you will see, which is why Paul and KSI claim their drink to be better for you, is that Gatorade has a considerable amount of added sugar. As mentioned, the announcement of Prime Hydration Drink, along with the partnership between Logan Paul and KSI made their drink immediately popular. It sold out fast online and if you go to their website now, you will see the same thing – sold out. When they aren’t sold out, they have six flavors to choose from that include Blue Raspberry, Tropical Punch, Lemon Lime, Grape, Orange, and their newest flavor, Ice Pop. In the United States, you can find Prime drink (when in stock) at stores such as Walmart, Target, Kroger, CVS, GNC, Ralph’s, and Vitamin Shoppe.
